SidelineTalk adds new “Game of the Week”
With the upcoming high school football season getting ready to kick off,...
Sunday, the DeKalb County Jr. Pro Peewee team traveled to Livingston to take on the Overton County Outlaws in part two of their competition this year. The game, postponed from Saturday due to heavy rains, was the Tigers’ most complete performance thus far this season to defeat the Outlaws, 25-0.
The potent Tiger offense scored early and often, cashing in on every possession. Backed by a 262 total yards, 4 touchdown performance, the Tigers were able to move the ball up and down the field throughout the contest.
The Black and Gold defense didn’t disappoint either, allowing only 86 total yards to the Outlaws, while forcing two turnovers, one leading to a score and the other effectively ending the game.
By forcing an Outlaw on their third play from scrimmage, the Tiger defense set the offense up in great shape to begin its first possession at the Overton County 35 yard line. The offense quickly put together a 6 play drive, ending with a 3 yard touchdown rumble by Ryan Thompson. The PAT attempt would fail, however, and with 3:08 left in the first quarter, DeKalb led, 6-0.
The DC defense would allow Overton County to put together its only sustained drive of the day on the Outlaws’ next possession. DeKalb watched as Livingston was able to run out the rest of the period and eat into much of the second quarter, before the defense stiffened, stopping the Outlaws on fourth down at the DeKalb 36 yard line.
DeKalb would quickly move the ball back into Overton County territory. Backed by big runs by Conner Close, Ryan Thompson and Marquez Chalfant, the Tigers scored again on a 20 yard Chalfant run. The PAT again would fail but with 41 seconds left in the half, DeKalb led, 12-0.
Conner Close had a big day for the Tigers Sunday. He rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown in the Tigers’ game at Livingston.
Ryan Thompson would explode in the second half.
In DeKalb’s first series of the third quarter, Tiger quarterback Briz Trapp would hand the ball off three times to Thompson, who ripped off gains each play, the last being a huge 59 yard touchdown scramble to increase the Tigers’ advantage again. This time Konner Young would muscle his way in for the conversion and with 4:30 left in the third, DeKalb led 19-0.
DeKalb would force an Overton three-and-out on their next possession before putting together perhaps the Tigers’ most impressive drive of the day. Moving the ball 62 yards on 9 plays, DeKalb scored from 24 yards out on a Conner Close touchdown sprint to put the Tigers up even more. The PAT conversion failed, but DeKalb led, 25-0 with 7:49 left in the game.
Head Coach Brad Trapp would begin substituting in his second string on Overton County’s next possession, to hopefully seal the shutout.
They didn’t disappoint.
After a crushing Wesley Kent sack, Luke Midgett recovered a fumble to effectively end the game and complete the shutout for the Tigers.
With the win, DeKalb improves to 4-1 on the season and retains a two way tie with Smith County for first place in the league. The regular season championship will be settled next Saturday as DeKalb travels to Carthage to take on the Owls in the last regular season game of the year. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
