The Peewee Tigers pulled back to 2-2 on the season with a 13-12 defeat of the Monterey Wildcats in Baxter Sunday in thrilling fashion.  In a game that was held over from the weekend before because of threatening weather, the Tigers entered Sunday’s action with 57 seconds to play in the third quarter, tied with the Wildcats 6-6.

Westin Wright had 72 yards and the go ahead conversion attempt for the Tigers Sunday.

Coming off a sluggish game the day before, Coach Kevin Kent and his staff wondered what kind of mind frame their team would be in.

It took basically one quarter to get his answer.

After stopping the Wildcats on fourth down deep in their own territory, quarterback Wesley Kent, methodically led his team downfield throughout the fourth quarter, running the entire period out.

As in all league Jr. Pro games, overtime periods see each team get the ball on the 10 yard line to begin any extra periods.  Receiving the ball first, it took Monterey only 3 plays to cross into the end zone.  What would prove to be fatal for the Wildcats, however, they were unable to convert the point after attempt, but suddenly, DeKalb saw themselves with just four downs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Snatch they would.

After being stymied by the stiff Wildcat defense on three consecutive downs, Owen Snipes would break free from 15 yards out to score the tying touchdown.  DeKalb’s point after would not fail, as wheel horse, Westin Wright would rumble in to give DeKalb the conversion, and the game, 13-12.

For the game, Owen Snipes scored both of the Tigers’ touchdowns and had 27 yards rushing.  Westin Wright led the team on the ground, running for 72 yards on 11 attempts.  Wesley Kent added 42 yards and Drew Dakas had 22.  Axel Aranda had 5 yards rushing and Cesar Gaspar had 3.

Defensively, Luke Midgett led the Tigers with 3 tackles and a sack in the contest.  Owen Snipes had 4 tackles while Wesley Kent had three.  Ayden Bean, Seth Fuson and Axel Aranda each added two tackles, while Antonio Thomas, Kholton Melton, Weston Wright and Drew Dakas each had a tackle in the contest.

Saturday the team will get a much deserved home game when the Fentress County Bulldogs will travel to Smithville.  Game time is 4:00.
