It was Homecoming for the DMS Saints Thursday night and the school celebrated before the game with the traditional homecoming pageantry and all around good cheer that’s incurred by the event.

Paxton Butler had the Saints' lone score of the game. Bulter rushed 4 times for 23 yards and caught a 10 yard pass in the contest.

That cheer was dampened somewhat, however, when the Saints fell to the visiting Westmoreland Eagles, 14-6.

DeKalb started the game in a fashion that led the crowd to envision a big homecoming win for the Saints, as DMS marched down field on its very first possession with ease  to take the early 6-0 lead.  Backed by big runs by Tyler Cantrell, Paxton Butler, Tyler Bundy and Jessie Smith, the Saints looked like they might be able to move the ball on the ground all night .

Two possessions later, the Saints looked like they would break through again.   Invigorated by a big 28 yard pitch and catch from Cantrell to Grayson Redmon, DeKalb would drive all the way to the Eagle 10 yard line before penalties helped to stall the drive out.  Still though, the Blue and Red defense played well in the first half, allowing Westmoreland only 25 total yards in the first half, and going into the break, DeKalb looked like the came was within their control.

Things would change in the second half.

Early in the fourth quarter the Eagles put together an impressive 11 play 51 yard scoring drive that put Westmoreland on top 8-6.  After turning the Saints over on downs, Westmoreland went 33 yards on five plays to score again and increase their lead to 14-6.  Middle couldn’t answer and the Eagles escaped Smithville with a victory.

The Saints will hold 8th grade night next Thursday when Cornerstone pays a visit to Smithville.  Festivities start at 6:00.
